’16 Days of Activism: No Violence Against Women and Children’

During this year’s ‘16 Days of Activism’ Campaign, the Community Law Centre’s Gender Project and the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children are working together to create greater awareness of the issue of gender-based violence against women with disabilities.

The activities planned for the Campaign by the Gender Project & the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children include:

  • An information exchange workshop, to be held on 8 December 08 in Cape Town (to be repeated in Worcester and Hermanus on 9 and 10 December respectively) aimed at discussing current shortcomings in the criminal justice response to violence against women with disabilities as well as the rights of disabled women who are victims of gender-based violence. The workshops will also aim at formulating recommendations for improvement of current shortcomings. Details of the workshops will be posted here shortly.
  • Producing information material, aimed at raising awareness of the need to improve the response to violence against women with disabilities.

In addition, the Community Law Centre and the Legal Aid Clinic at the University of the Western Cape are hosting a morning seminar on the implementation of the new Sexual Offences Act, 2007 relating to persons with intellectual disabilities on 2 December 2008. See details of the seminar here.
